Which is best? To road bike alone? Or to cycle with a group. I'd say you get a balance from both.
I've only cycled with a group twice. 98 percent of them pro athletes, probably 30 percent of them triathletes. But my personal preference is still to cycle alone.
Road bikers like what they say are strategizers. We work in the deep mind and.. Probably caught planning out our work or giving deep thoughts to life management. Maybe just some of us, but we're definitely not the more crazy packs like our MTB brothers.
Since I started cycling 10 mths ago, inspired by my father who rounded up peninsula malaysia, and rode alone from BKK to Seremban for charity, I've been loving the peacefulness of the journey in riding alone. At times I'd push myself, other times I take it slow and really put attention to what's around me in the journey. However cycling with the group boosts your motivation, feel belonged with like-minded people and know your standard and ability.
I decide my destination only on the morning I ride and after I'm all geared up. Kelana jaya to putrajaya, or carey island, ampang and around, ijok, along kesas, klang, are the few I frequent most. Its really refreshing to discover many things along the way that I don't normally see while driving. And its definitely only riding on bike lanes that I see the amazingly crafted tunnels that goes from all kinds of directions underground and even above the main roads.
Never have I been disappointed with my rides, while getting so close to the fields that made me think "wow, I never notice the grass here is really green". I'd get to also see a different community and lifestyle below the raised highway.
Ofcourse besides the leisure, how can we forget the sore and sweat and moments I thought I'd get a heart attack from climbing the hill. Especially under the hot midday sun hanging just above u poking ur skin like needles and my body temperature rise so high my veins could explode. Even if I don't, my meter might.
After a day's out, I always end it by saying "that was a great ride" with 100% satisfaction. I'd return home a better man, more refreshed, and more ready to take up any challenges ahead, plus a firmer thigh and butt.
Now, my next aim is to tour to Bangkok on a bicycle!
